Fethiye Saklıkent Canyon

Fethiye Saklıkent Canyon, one of the most touristy spots in the Fethiye district, is a canyon formed by the Karaçay, a branch of the Esen River located on the Antalya-Muğla border. This tourist hotspot is situated in the Seydikemer district and manages to attract millions of tourists from both domestic and international origins every year. The canyon, admired by everyone, presents us with a natural wonder due to the limestone terrain in the region and the presence of fault lines, resulting in a rugged and deep canyon. With a length of 18 kilometers and a height of 200 meters, the canyon is known to narrow down to as little as 2 meters at its narrowest point. Fethiye Saklıkent Canyon area was declared a National Park through an official announcement published in the Official Gazette on June 6, 1996. Covering an area of 12,390 hectares, the national park is shared by three villages on the borders of Kaş and Seydikemer.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry prepared to intervene in the canyon spoken of by the locals, and the discovery of the canyon was officially announced by government officials. The Ministry soon provided National Park status for Fethiye Saklıkent Canyon. Following the activities of private companies around the canyon, the region, which is a natural wonder, reached its present state.


Natural Life in Fethiye Saklıkent Canyon

As a National Park, Fethiye Saklıkent Canyon is home to various natural habitats. The park is particularly renowned for the plants it harbors. These plants include shrubs at low altitudes, red and black pines, and cedar trees at higher altitudes. However, it's known that at the entrance of the canyon, red pines are more common. Tourists who ascend above 1000 meters in the canyon can observe more black pines. Cedar trees, which also serve as monumental trees, can be seen in the higher areas of Dumanlıdağ. Additionally, it's known that some endemic plants like Cyclamen are found in the Aktar Plateau.


Usage Area of Fethiye Saklıkent Canyon

Fethiye Saklıkent Canyon, whose popularity has been increasing over the years, is promoted as a usage area for everyone in different ways. In summer, the canyon is a picnic area for the locals of Fethiye and is a must-see natural wonder for domestic and foreign tourists. Additionally, winter tourism occurs in the region for approximately 2-3 months through the Saklıkent Ski Center located in the Bakırlıdağ area, situated in the upper parts of the Taurus Mountains.


Moreover, in areas where water doesn't pose a hindrance throughout Fethiye Saklıkent Canyon, visitors can engage in nature walks amidst the wilderness. In areas known for challenging terrain, authorities have supported the region with fixed suspension bridges. This allows tourists to easily embark on unforgettable nature walks.


How to Reach Fethiye Saklıkent Canyon?

Tourists visiting Fethiye Saklıkent Canyon for the first time often wonder how to get to the area. The region can be easily accessed via Antalya, Burdur, Muğla, and Seydikemer. The canyon is located approximately 50 km from Antalya city center. It's also easily accessible from Fethiye, being 45 km away, with easy access from the Kayadibi neighborhood of the district.


Additionally, minibus services to Saklıkent are available for tourists visiting Fethiye. Furthermore, tourists coming from the south can reach the canyon through the Palamut Neighborhood via the Yeşilova-Kalkan junction. It's worth mentioning that tourists coming from the north can reach the canyon through Burdur.
